    South of the Border

    • Located 60 miles north of Myrtle Beach, near Dillon, South Carolina, South of the Border is a kitschy roadside attraction that began as a beer stand in 1949. Located just south of the North Carolina border, South of the Border was built at a time when the sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited in certain dry counties in North Carolina. Over time, a restaurant was added, then a motel, followed by a series of increasingly unusual fixtures with a Mexican theme. Today, South of the Border features a modern motel, an RV and campground, an amusement park, a 200-foot sombrero-shaped observation tower, two miniature golf courses, an arcade, three restaurants, a discount fireworks warehouse and much more. South of the Border is regionally famous for its collection of roughly 175 billboards scattered throughout the area, each of which features a different clever headline.
