Newport, Kentucky, is located just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio. It has the Newport Aquarium, which is the centerpiece of the Newport on the Levee Entertainment Complex, and is filled with movie theaters, shops, bars and restaurants, most of which don't get going until lunch time. If you want to walk the Purple People Bridge across the river, check out the sharks in the acrylic tunnels at the aquarium and shop, you can get an early start by eating breakfast nearby.
Waffle House is a regional chain, with waffles (of course), eggs, biscuits and a variety of hash browns. Hash browns come smothered in cheese, onions, mushrooms, ham or tomatoes, or with all the toppings. Since you are close to Cincinnati and its famous chili, you might want to try an omelet filled with chili. There is a children's menu.

Mammoth Cafe is a cute, independent coffee shop that serves a variety of coffee and teas, fresh baked goods, and a decent vegetarian burrito. It is so local that it doesn't even bother with a website, but there is free Wi-Fi and plenty of magazines if you don't want to make small talk. Mammoth is the place to get a latte, espresso with steamed milk, or spicy chai tea, with a muffin or scone.

Martha Jeanne's, a couple of minutes from Newport in neighboring Bellevue is worth the walk. This funky restaurant has a full breakfast menu, great coffee and is very family friendly. There are high chairs and a children's menu. Get a piece of homemade pie for a treat later in the day. Martha Jeanne's also does not have a website.
