Oldest Restaurants & Bars in New York City

New York City is home to countless attractions, not the least of which are its many varied restaurants and bars. If you're looking for "old New York," you can find it in several establishments that have been serving natives and visitors for more than 100 years.

  1. McSorley's Old Ale House

    • McSorley's Old Ale House hasn't changed much since it was established in 1854, except women are allowed in now (and have been since 1970). Billing itself as New York City's oldest continuously operating saloon, McSorley's still has sawdust on the floor, and the bar still serves only one beverage: ale, light or dark.

A daily menu of pub fare is a recent addition; the day's offerings are written on two chalkboards.

    Landmark Tavern

    • When the Landmark Tavern opened on 11th Avenue in 1868, it was on the shores of the Hudson River--12th Avenue didn't exist then. One of New York City's oldest continually operating establishments, the Landmark survived Prohibition by opening a speakeasy on the third floor.

In addition to its full bar, the Landmark specializes in high-end Irish pub food, including Scotch eggs and lamb shanks with new potatoes, peas and carrots. It's open for brunch, lunch and dinner and also offers a children's menu.

    Peter Luger Steak House

    • Peter Luger Steak House opened in Brooklyn in 1887 and has been known for preparing and serving fine selections of beef ever since. The lively Old World atmosphere is accented by an older wait staff who provide menus only upon request; after all, everyone orders steak.

Sides, such as French-fried potatoes and creamed spinach are served a la carte, and there are daily lunch specials, including pot roast, filet of sole and corned beef and cabbage.
