Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park in Maine offers a variety of great outdoor activities year round, two museums and two campgrounds. Acadia is one of 58 national parks in the United States.

  1. Location

    • Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, about 50 miles southeast of Bangor.

    History

    • George B. Dorr was the founder of Acadia National Park. He spent several decades dedicated to acquiring tracts of land for preservation, which eventually became Acadia in 1929.

    Activities

    • Several water activities are available at Acadia, including fishing, swimming, kayaking and boating. Visitors can also ride bikes, camp, picnic and hike at the park during warmer months. In the winter, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and snowmobiling are popular activities at the park.

    Camping

    • Two main campgrounds at Acadia (Blackwoods and Seawall) accommodate campers in small or large tents, pop-ups, campers and RVs. Nightly fees range from about $10 to $20 per site, with lower fees in the off-season (April and November) and free camping in winter.

    Museums

    • The park has two museums: the Islesford Historical Museum and the Sieur de Monts Nature Center. Both offer free admission.

    Seasons of Operation

    • The park headquarters is open year-round, but the main visitors' center and two museums are closed from November through April. Winter camping is available.
