Hawaii is known for sprawling, lush environments, beautiful ocean views, surfing and ideal fishing. There are several great areas that you should know about when choosing a place to fish or harvest lobster. The key is having adequate equipment and being in the correct location at the correct time.
The best place to fish for large Ulua fish is on the South Shore, because of the deep water around the volcanic rock. Since the water is so deep so close to shore, you can catch fish that are 100 pounds or more. Make sure you have a very sturdy line and big equipment. Use eel as bait and at least size 50 reels. Even with this sturdy equipment, it is important to make sure you tie it down. Keep an eye on the weather conditions, especially if you don't know the area that well.
The best place for spearfishing is at Makapuu Bay on the South Shore of Oahu, especially if you don't have a lot of experience. You won't have to wear scuba gear or dive too deep. Target Uhu and octopus using a two- or three-prong spear. Keep an eye out for predators and be very alert while swimming around the rocks.
If you have ever wanted to dive for lobster, Hawaii is the best place to do it--it's legal and also surprisingly simple. All you really need is a pair of thick gloves and a mask. The best place to find lobsters is on the West side of Oahu. Search in holes in the lava rock, but make sure to poke a stick or spear in the hole first to make sure there are no eels present.
Yokohama Bay is a fishing spot on the West side of Oahu that is ideal for fishing for pretty much anything, specifically ulua, mahi mahi and lobster.
