Located in central Florida, Orlando is a vacation destination like no other. The city is full of things to do and see. Whether you're traveling with your children or taking time for a private adults-only getaway, the city has something to offer to everyone. However, planning is going to be required if you want to make the most from your excursion.
The best time to visit Orlando is during the off-season, which is really just fall (August through early November) and the beginning of the year (January and February). Prices are lower and crowds are less dense. Temperatures are also milder. However, the climate in Orlando is perfect for a visit any time of year.
Orlando is home to its own international airport and to a second airport, the Orlando Sanford Airport. Most visitors seem to arrive by plane and most hotels in the area will provide transportation to and from the airport for guests. You can also take a cruise. The port for most of the cruise lines serving Florida is just an hour away from Orlando and bus transportation is usually provided. Car travel to Orlando is another option.
Because of the competition between the Universal and the Disney theme parks in Orlando, you may want to decide on what you want to see before you choose a hotel. Vacation packages are available through both theme park systems and can save you a great deal of money. Plus, you may receive extra perks, such as free transportation to the parks. Although prices are lower for accommodations outside of Orlando, you'll have more time to enjoy the city if you stay inside the city limits.
Orlando is full of attractions. You could choose to explore Walt Disney World's four theme parks: the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Disney Hollywood Studios. Disney also includes two water parks. Universal also has its movie theme park in Orlando, plus you can visit Sea World, Discovery Cove, Aquatica and Gatorland. Remember that prices are high for these theme parks so plan accordingly. Buying advance tickets can save you money.
You'll definitely need sunscreen to protect you from the Florida sun since most of the attractions are outdoors. Cool clothing and comfortable walking shoes are also things you must pack. Sunglasses and hats with visors are also good options. If you're going to be visiting the theme parks, bring along a fan with a built-in mister. These are a nice way to stay cool and can be purchased in your local stores for about one-fourth of what you'll pay in the theme parks.
