The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a U-shaped glass bridge suspended 4,000 feet above the Colorado River and jutting 70 feet from the rim of the western canyon. Open seven days a week, it provides tourist with a breath-taking perspective of the canyon.
Construction of the bridge began in March 2004. The Skywalk opened to tourists on March 28, 2007.
Inspections confirmed the Grand Canyon Skywalk is capable of safely supporting 71 million pounds which is equivalent to the weight of 71 fully loaded Boeing 747 planes.
Since opening in 2007, the skywalk has welcomed more than 600,000 domestic and international visitors with an average of 3,000 each day.
The bridge is located in a remote area privately owned by the Hualapi Tribe. Tourists entering the area are required to secure a tribal visitors pass at the cost of $29.95. Accessing the Grand Canyon Skywalk will cost an additional $29.95.
A newly constructed lookout building, expected to open in late 2009, will provide skywalk visitors with a complete experience by housing restaurants and gift shops.
