Who planned the US Capital?

The United States Capitol was designed by William Thornton, an amateur architect from the District of Columbia who won a design competition sponsored by President George Washington and the fledgling federal government. The cornerstone of the US Capitol was laid on September 18, 1793, by President George Washington, with Masonic ceremonies.
