Why is America actually called The big apple for?

The nickname "Big Apple" for New York City is widely believed to have originated from the early 20th century when jazz musicians referred to the city as the "Big Apple" because it was the ultimate goal for any striving jazz musician. The term first appeared in print in 1921 in the New York Morning Telegraph.
