Why is the Mississippi river called since it goes through so many different states?

The Mississippi River is called the Mississippi River regardless of the number of states it passes through because the lower course of the river system that empties into the Gulf of Mexico has traditionally been referred to by that name. The entire river system, including the major tributaries upstream from the Mississippi, is sometimes called the Mississippi River System.
