If the trade winds carried traders from Europe to Americas what wind system back?

The trade winds are a system of winds that blow from the east to the west in the Earth's tropical regions. These winds were used by European traders to sail from Europe to the Americas. However, the trade winds do not blow in the opposite direction, from the Americas back to Europe. The winds that blew sailors back to Europe were a combination of the polar westerlies and the mid-latitude westerlies. These winds blow from the west to the east, and were strong enough to push sailing ships back across the Atlantic Ocean.
