How to Pick an Electronic Translator

Whether you're learning a new language or simply need to pick up a few key phrases for a trip abroad, consider a hand-held electronic translator to help you find the words you need. Study these features and tips to help you pick the unit that will best suit your needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if a single language translator will be sufficient. If you plan to travel somewhere else in the future (or have friends who may want to borrow the tool), however, consider one that teaches up to 12 languages so you won't have to buy a second device (see Resources).

    • 2

Choose an electronic translator that lets you speak the English word or phrase and then says it for you in the new language using speech synthesis. Some models will also display the phrase phonetically on the screen if you'd like to pronounce it yourself. Find a unit that also includes colloquial phrases to help you communicate with locals even more effectively.

    • 3

Determine if you'd rather have a unit with a touch screen or a QWERTY style keyboard so you can type in the words if you're used to typing or text messaging on your phone.

    • 4

Look for added features like a backlight so you'll be able to use the translator in a variety of lighting conditions, an earphone jack and volume control and even a built-in travel guide to help you find local hotels, restaurants and landmarks.

    • 5

Opt for a slim device that you can slip into your purse, pocket or even clip on your belt buckle to keep it handy when you travel. Find one with a hinged lid to close over the screen and keys to prevent damage.

    • 6

Research the type of batteries the unit uses or find a unit that you can recharge for several hours of use. You won't want to find yourself stranded with an electronic translator that no longer works.
