Meals Served on Overseas Flights

Airline meals on overseas flights are generally included in the price of the ticket because of the length of time passengers will be in flight. On shorter flights, most airlines offer small snacks that are either complimentary or can be purchased.

The rule of thumb for most flights is that any length after 2.5 hours is considered long enough to start serving meals and snacks. Airline meals need to be frozen and then reheated onboard, as there are no facilities for cooking. British Airways, United Air and Air France are three major carriers that serve overseas meals.
  1. British Airways

    • First-class travelers get their choice of several entrees, all containing protein unless a vegetarian option was ordered in advance. All other classes are offered either hot entrees appropriate for the time of day or cold menu items like sandwich wraps, desserts and salads. British Airways does not serve food cooked with peanuts because of food allergies, but passengers are allowed to bring peanuts onboard.

    Air France

    • Air France is known for high-end dinner entrees complete with a protein, a wedge of cheese, a dinner roll and a dessert cake or piece of chocolate. The meals are complimentary. Vegetarian and Kosher options are available if notified 48 hours in advance of your flight.

    United Airlines

    • Passengers in first class on overseas flights can customize their dinner entrees by ordering off a menu. Economy class is offered snacks and drinks, all complimentary, and a full meal at dinnertime. This includes a hot entree, a salad or appetizer and a dessert.
