How to Book a Flight for a Minor

Minors, anyone under the age of 18, may fly alone as an unaccompanied minor. All airlines allow unaccompanied minors aboard their flights and even make special arrangements for their comfort and safety. Children 4 years old and younger are not permitted to fly alone on any airline, for any reason. Many airlines request that a minor be at least 8 years old to book a flight with a layover. Unaccompanied minor's airline tickets cost the same as adult fare and many airlines charge an additional unaccompanied minor service fee.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the airline your unaccompanied minor will be traveling on. Online reservations for unaccompanied minors are prohibited on all airlines.

    • 2

Explain to the reservations agent that you'd like to book a flight for your unaccompanied minor. Answer all of the agent's questions and feel free to ask any questions of your own--airline agents expect you to have a list of questions to ask before sending your child off on his own flight.

    • 3

Provide the reservations agent with the following information: departure city, arrival city, departure date, return date and the age of your child. The agent will locate a flight for you, asking you to choose between several options.

    • 4

Provide your credit card information to the reservations agent and write down your confirmation number. The agent will make a note that your ticket is for an unaccompanied minor and special considerations will be given to your child before and during the flight.
