Coordinating travel for a business meeting, sporting event or family reunion requires extra planning. When a large group is traveling together, book as early as possible so everyone can get on the same flight. Most domestic, international and discount airlines accommodate your travel request when you want to make reservations for a large group.
In order to get the group rate for airline travel, domestic carriers including Delta, United and Southwest require you to have 10 people or more flying to the same destination at the same time. International airlines such as Aer Lingus consider your passengers a group if there are at least seven passengers.
Airlines provide flexibility and in some cases discounts for groups. You can buy a group of reservations and provide the names of passengers at a later date. Ticketing requirements depend on the airline. For example, Aer Lingus requires the passengers' names 10 days in advance of the flight and Southwest Airlines requires a deposit per reservation to hold seats. You cannot make online reservations for a group with any of the airlines. Call the company's toll-free number -- provided by the chosen airline on its website -- and an agent will assist you.
The person making the reservation needs the travel dates, departure and arrival destinations and identifying information for all travelers in the group. This includes full name, sex, date of birth and -- if the flight is international -- passport numbers.
