Italy's national airline, Alitalia has operated since 1947. Today, this large commercial carrier provides the international service throughout the country, flying more than 25 million passengers a year.
Book your flight on Alitalia's Web site (see Resources below). Click on the American flag to see the English-language version of the site. Reservations can also be made by calling the airline at (800) 223-5730.
Enter the departure and arrival airports. To access a drop-down menu of airports listed by country, click "Find an airport."
Select the dates you wish to travel. You can also specify the time of day.
Select the number of passengers.
Search by price or schedule. You can also select whether you wish to see only coach or business fares before hitting the "Search" button.
Choose your flight. After paying with a credit card, you will be issued an e-ticket, which you can use to access your itinerary online and check in at the ticket counter on the day of your departure.
Fly to five continents. Between Alitalia and its partner airlines, you can find connecting flights to countries around the world.
Enroll in Alitalia's frequent-flyer program, MilleMiglia, to earn points towards free travel on Alitalia and its partners.
Find Alitalia's main hubs in Rome and Varese (just outside of Milan), which offer international service. A third hub is the Linate Airport, a regional airport in Milan.
Consult Alitalia's baggage allowances before you pack. Limitations are based on the weight, not the number, of bags. Allowances range from 20 to 30 kg (44 to 66 pounds) per passenger.
Review Alitalia's suggested check-in times, which vary from city to city and differ for international and regional travel. They range from 20 to 60 minutes prior to your departure time.
Use Alitalia's fast automated check-in at select airports if you have an e-ticket and will not be checking any bags.
