Air Travel Carry-On Regulations

In 2006, America's Transportation Security Administration set new travel carry-on guidelines that limit the amount of liquids a passenger can carry on the plane. The new guidelines also prohibit certain items.
  1. Liquids and Gels

    • Each passenger is allowed to carry on one quart-sized plastic bag containing the passenger's liquids. Each bottle of liquid, or gel, cannot weigh more than 3 oz. by volume, and the bottle carrying the liquid cannot be over 3.4 oz. Certain medications, baby formula and breast milk can weigh over 3 oz. but must be inspected by security.

    Prohibited Items

    • All sharp objects are prohibited in a carry-on bag, including box cutters, knives, razors and scissors. Sporting good such as balls, bats or sticks are also prohibited. All guns and gun powder are prohibited. Sharp tools such as drills, saws and wrenches cannot be carried on. Explosives, propulsive chemicals and candles are prohibited as well.

    Food and Gifts

    • Wine, liquor and beer cannot be carried on. Cologne and perfume should be checked. Gift baskets with food items should be checked, along with any jellies, gravies, creamy dips, peanut butter, salsa, sauces, salad dressings, and oils and vinegars. Cakes and pies may be carried on but will be thoroughly examined, which may alter the presentation of the gift.
