How to Compare Low Airfares

A spur-of-the-moment decision to fly generally incurs a high-priced ticket. However, a little advanced planning can reduce the airfare, especially if you're willing to fly mid-week or in the late afternoon or evening. Planning also allows airfare comparisons.
  1. Travel Sites

    • Travel sites like Orbitz, Expedia or Travelocity display a range of airlines and flights for your destination and date. Sorting the list by price puts the lowest airfares at the top, so you can compare them.

    Airlines

    • You can check individual airline websites such as Southwest, JetBlue or Delta, using information gleaned from the travel sites. Airline companies often have the lowest airfares on their own sites. You can also sign up for frequent flyer programs or email clubs for even more discounts.

    Travel agent

    • Contact your local travel agent for airfares. They have access to reservation systems not available to the public and often buy airline seats in bulk, so they can offer their customers discounts. You can find a list of travel agents at the American Society of Travel Agents.
