How to Compare Distances

Preparation can make a difference when traveling long distances. When comparing the distance between a starting point and a destination, many factors come into play that will decide whether travel will be time-consuming, tiring, hazardous and cumbersome, or quick, safe and enjoyable.
  1. Travel Time

    • Highways and major roads aren't always the best choice to cover distance quickly.

When preparing for travel, it pays to access the Internet to plan and compare the routes that you wish to take ahead of time (see the Resources section). Some routes may have the same distance, but different travel times due to landscape, congestion or speed limits.

    Mode Of Travel

    • The way that you cover a certain distance may be significant, depending on whether you are traveling by car, air, ship or on foot. Flying long distances may be more desirable than driving because you will arrive at your destination faster. Each form of travel requires a different amount of time to get from point A to point B, has various impacts on traveler and environment and fits a different budget.

    Accommodations and Rest Areas

    • The farther the distance, the greater the strain on the traveler. Depending on which highways that you choose, for instance, there will be more or less rest stops, gas stations, motels and other accommodations available. Sometimes taking the longer way around will be more enjoyable because of greater comfort, while taking a shorter route will get you to your destination sooner, but is less entertaining.
