Not every site will contact you if prices drop. Look at the travel packages each site offers. Some sites do not offer packages that include hotel, car and airfare.
Read the refund policies before booking your trip on a travel search engine. Read the agreement. Make sure that it says you can cancel within a certain period of time and still get at least a partial refund. If you are using travel insurance, make sure the travel company will work with your insurance company if you need to cancel or reschedule.
