Open your Internet browser and in the URL window, type in the name of a major airline comparison website. Some such sites are Orbitz, Expedia, Cheap Tickets and Hotwire. Hit "Enter" on your keyboard.
Check the word "Flight" or "Air" on the screen, in the box with all the travel options.
Specify if you're looking for a one-way, round-trip or multi-city flight just below that by checking the appropriate box or circle.
Enter the code for the airports you will be leaving from and going to. If you don't know the code for your airports, enter the names of the cities where the airports are located.
Enter the date you want to depart and the date you want to return. Typically, when you click on the departure and return boxes, a small calendar will pop up. Click on the date on the calendar that you want to travel. To scroll to the next month, click on the little arrows at the top right-hand corner of the calendar.
Choose your preferred travel times, if that option is available. Not all sites offer this, but you can choose from different flights at different travel times later on in the process if the option isn't offered at this point.
Specify how many people will be traveling using the drop-down menu.
Specify if you want to only see results for nonstop flights by checking the box for this option, if there is one.
Specify whether you want to travel coach, business or first class.
Click on the "Find Flights" or "Search" button.
Scroll through the list of search results until you find a flight that you like. Write down the name of the carrier, the number of the flight, the price for the flight and departure and arrival times.
Go to another travel website and search flights there to increase your base of comparison.
Scroll down through the search results until you find the same flight you selected at the other travel comparison website. See which one offers the lower price for the same flight.
