How to Compare Flight Charges

Once you've booked your flight you might wonder if there is a better deal and whether you overpaid for your ticket. Did you look around enough? Did you compare enough fares? Did you check every possible airline? The questions you ask yourself might seem endless. However, comparing flight fares and charges is easy. Provide yourself peace of mind by following a few simple rules for comparing airfare charges before making your final purchase.

Instructions

    • 1

Compare airfare using travel sites (see Resources). Travel sites allow you to enter your travel information--dates, destinations and number of passengers--and provide you with the total cost of airfare for the flight on every airline flying from your departure city to your destination.

    • 2

Change your airport information to further compare flight charges. For example, if your intended destination is Los Angeles you can change your arrival airport from LAX to John Wayne, which is in Orange County, less than an hour from Los Angeles. Compare the cost of flying into a nearby airport to see if the price difference is worth the switch.

    • 3

Change your departure date by 24 hours forward or behind--if your travel plans allow for flexibility. Instead of comparing airfare to depart on Saturday, try departing on Sunday instead and compare the difference in flight charges. Is any price difference worth the change of date and/or airport?
