How to Use a Ticketless Confirmation on Southwest Airlines

Ticketless air travel is becoming increasingly common with U.S. carriers, and Southwest Airlines is no exception. Ticketless travel reduces waiting time for you, simplifies the processing for the airline and cuts down on postage since your tickets are not mailed to you. If you have never tried ticketless air travel before, you will be happy to know that it is extremely easy and not altogether different from ticketed air travel.

Things You'll Need

  • Confirmation number
  • Valid photo identification

Instructions

    • 1

Print out the confirmation email you received after purchasing your Southwest ticket. If you do not have access to a printer, write down the confirmation number mentioned in the email. It is absolutely essential that you have this number--if not, you will not be able to board your plane.

    • 2

Arrive at the airport with plenty of time to get through ticket and security lines. You should be there at least two hours early, and possibly earlier if current Transportation Security Administration guidelines are stricter than usual. It's better to be safe than sorry, particularly with air travel.

    • 3

Present your confirmation email and a valid identification at the ticket counter in order to receive your boarding pass. Valid identification includes either a passport, a drivers license or photo identification approved by the state. Alternatively, consider using a rapid check-in kiosk, which contains very simple on-screen instructions. You can usually use these kiosks even if you have bags to check in, but if you are uncertain, ask a Southwest employee.

    • 4

Follow the airport terminal signs to your gate, and then follow the instructions at the gate to board the plane. You will be required to pass through one or more security lines. Keep your confirmation number with you if your trip includes a return journey. You will use the same number to obtain your boarding pass on that flight as well.
