Things to Do on the Way to Disney World

While heading to Disney World, the wait can seem like forever. Besides indulging in stale airline peanuts and staring at the person's head in front of you, or saying "are we there yet?" from the backseat of the car, what can you do to keep entertained on the way to Disney World? From drawing to knitting, anything is possible on your journey.

  1. Doodling and Games

    • Take a drawing tablet and a bag of pencils, and doodle the trip away. Draw some of your favorite Disney characters to help put you in the Disney mood, or play games with a family member. Some good choices are tic-tac-toe, dots (the game where you draw boxes by connecting the dots one line at a time), hangman or Pictionary.

    Listen to Music

    • Fill your music player with some of your favorite songs. Listening to music helps take the edge off for anxious fliers, and headphones might help your ears not to pop during altitude changes. Fast-paced music puts you in a good mood and makes time seem to pass more quickly. Pay attention to the flight attendants so you know when it's okay to turn on your music device. Each person in a car could have their own music player so kids aren't stuck listening to oldies or Dad's off-key singing. Or everyone's music combined could provide a fun way to play Name That Tune. In a train, music can drown out the click-clack sound of the train on the tracks.

    Read a Book

    • Bring your favorite book with you. Depending on where you are flying or driving from, you can easily read a few chapters or even finish the book while traveling. Keep your mind engaged so you are not paying attention to your watch. If you have small children, bring several of their favorite storybooks for them to read; you can also read to them. Just remember: On a train or plane, there are other people along for the ride besides your family, so read quietly.

    Watch TV

    • On certain airlines, there are in-flight movies or television programs. Bring headphones just in case. However, there is only one screen approximately every four rows, so you may end up watching a show you don't like. If you are traveling by train or car, a mini-DVD player or MP3 video player would be sufficient.

    Knit

    • Check with your airline or train to see if passengers are allowed to bring knitting needles. During your trip, you can knit scarves, hats or even the beginning rows of a throw blanket.
