The History of Disney World in Orlando, Florida

Disney World, touted as the "happiest place on Earth," is a magical theme park located in central Florida. Offering rides, shows, parades and fireworks nightly, Disney World is a favorite destination among families, couples and singles.

  1. Founder

    • Walt Disney, founder of the Disney company, built both Disneyland and the Disney World resort. He made significant contributions to the silver screen, including producing the first full length animated musical, "Snow White."

    Construction

    • After buying thousands of acres of land in 1965, Disney began planning his new venture. Seven years was dedicated to the planning process for the park, and actual construction time was 52 months. Sadly, Walt died just months after purchasing the land.

    Opening

    • Disney World held its grand opening on October 1, 1971, amid great fanfare and anticipation. Tickets cost a mere $3.50 for adults and $1.00 for children, although admission did not include tokens for any of the rides.

    Parks and Resorts

    • Since 1971, Disney World has grown to include four large theme parks (Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and the Magic Kingdom), two water parks and over a dozen resort hotels. The development also includes a downtown area with shopping and restaurants, as well as a massive public transportation system that provides access to each attraction.

    Future Projects

    • Although Disney is tight-lipped about future projects, officials confirmed at a September 2009 conference that Fantasy Land at the Magic Kingdom will be overhauled to update some attractions and add new areas. The project should be complete by 2012, with minor changes to be completed in 2013.
