How many different type of fish are there in the ocean?

The exact number of fish in the ocean is unknown, but the vast majority of fish species have yet to be discovered and described. Scientists estimate that there may be as many as 250,000 to over 500,000 different types of fish around the world, or even up to 1 million species.
