Major Tributaries of the Orange River (Southern Africa)
The Orange River (Gariep) is South Africa's longest river (2,200 km). Its major tributaries:
- Vaal River — Longest tributary (1,120 km). Rises in Drakensberg, flows west across Free State, joins Orange near Douglas. Critical for Gauteng's water (Vaal Dam).
- Caledon River — Rises in Lesotho (Maloti Mountains), forms Lesotho–SA border, joins near Bethulie. Major Lesotho Highlands Water Project source.
- Senqu (Orange) River — The Orange's headwaters *in Lesotho*; called Senqu there. Same river, different name.
- Harts River — Tributary of the Vaal (not direct to Orange). Rises near Vryburg, joins Vaal near Kimberley.
- Fish River — Namibia's longest (650 km). Rises in Naukluft Mts, flows south to join Orange at Ai-Ais (near South African border). Spectacular Fish River Canyon.
Minor Tributaries
- Kraai, Riet, Modder, Vet, Kromellenboog, Ongers, Molopo (fossil), Kuruman (fossil).
Basin Significance
Drains ~973,000 km² (48% of SA, all Lesotho, parts of Botswana, Namibia). Supports irrigation (Orange River Project), hydropower (Gariep, Vanderkloof Dams), mining, and unique endemic fish (Orange River mudfish).
