NYC Taxi Fares: No Per-Block Rate — Metered by Time & Distance
There is no fixed "per block" taxi rate in New York City. Fares are calculated by a meter combining:
Fare Structure (2024)
- Initial charge: $3.00 (entry).
- Per 1/5 mile (0.3 km): $0.60 ($3.00/mile).
- Per minute (slow/stopped): $0.60 ($36.00/hr).
- Night surcharge (8 PM–6 AM): $1.00.
- Peak surcharge (4–8 PM weekdays): $1.00.
- State surcharge: $0.50.
- Airport flat rates: JFK ↔ Manhattan $70; LaGuardia ↔ Manhattan metered + $5; Newark metered + $17.50 + tolls.
Why No Per-Block Rate?
- Block lengths vary (200–800 ft).
- Traffic speed varies — time component dominates in congestion.
- Meter ensures fairness for both passenger and driver.
Example
Times Square → Empire State Building (~0.5 mi, 5 min): ~$3 + $1.50 (dist) + $3.00 (time) + $0.50 = ~$8 + tip.
Apps
Uber/Lyft use dynamic pricing (base + time + distance + surge). Often cheaper off-peak; taxis mandated for street hails.
