Complete the "MVS-80 Application of Car Dealer's License" form and pay the required application fee.
File the application with the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR). You can file the application online, by mail, or in person at the DOR office in Jefferson City or at any Missouri license bureau.
Submit a bond (or surety) in an amount of either $25,000 or $100,000, with the DOR. The bond must be from either an insurance company authorized to do business in the state of Missouri, or a bank that has a certificate of authority from the Missouri Division of Finance.
Provide background information about yourself, including criminal and financial histories, and submit fingerprints and a photograph for inclusion in the dealer license.
Take and pass the Car Dealer's Licensing Examination, which covers automotive laws and regulations. The exam is administered by the DOR.
Complete the required training if you are applying for a new car dealership license or applying for a license to sell used vehicles from a location that is not a licensed new vehicle dealership. The training must be completed at an approved training facility or through an approved online course.
Wait for your application to be processed and for your license to be issued. The DOR will review your application and conduct background investigations before issuing a dealer's license.
Additionally, you must have a business location that meets the requirements set by the Missouri DOR, such as a permanent physical location, signage, and appropriate insurance. You must also have a valid Missouri driver's license and be at least 18 years old.
Once you have obtained your car dealer's license, you must renew it every two years by paying a renewal fee and meeting any continuing education requirements.
