In 1937, the New York City government placed a limit on the number of taxi medallions that could be issued. Since then, the city has not issued any new medallions, aside from a small number of wheelchair-accessible taxis. As a result, the market for taxi medallions has become extremely limited and highly competitive, with prices often reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Today, there are approximately 13,587 medallion taxis on the road in New York City.
