Why is Canary Wharf Called Wharf?

The name "Canary Wharf" comes from the area's historical use as a wharf for unloading cargoes of Canary wine in the 19th century. Wine and other imports from the Canary Islands and Madeira were once brought to the warehouses that lined the River Thames at this point during that era. These shipments, including wine brought over in distinctive canary-yellow containers, helped to lend the wharf its now-famous moniker. Over time, as urban developments transformed the area into a contemporary financial district in the late 20th century, Canary Wharf kept its historic name, serving as a reminder of its rich mercantile ancestry.
