Alaska, with its rugged terrain, mountains and ocean views has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the US. Although there are a number of way to get to The Last Frontier, one of the most common routes is by ferry. Ferrys provide convenience for passengers who are traveling with items that are not transportable when traveling by air, such as cars and pets and can often lend more spacious, comfortable accommodations.

    • Alaska Ferry, located on Alaska's inside passage of Petersburg, is a full service ferry service that provides transportation to points located throughout the state of Alaska. Alaska Ferry provides accommodations for individuals and groups alike as well as the transportation of motorcycles and vehicles. Alaska Ferry allows transportation for family pets, as long as the owner can provide a health report for the pet that has been issued within the last 30 days before travel. As of September, 2010, rates for individuals varied based on destination and date of travel, but averaged $250 per person and included private cabin. A variety of snack foods and meal services are also offered based on length of travel.The transportation of vehicles varied based on type of vehicle and its length and width and the maximum rate for pet transport was $25 per pet.

    Alaska Marine Highway

    • The Alaska Marine Highway System is the state of Alaska's official ferry system. The Alaska Marine Highway System provides transportation for passengers, vehicles, pets and services destinations througout the state of Alaska from the southeastern region of Ketchikan and Juneau, throughout the Gulf of Alaska and into destinations in the Bearing Sea. Transportation includes fully functional, private cabins that are complete with private shower and meal services are also offered for an additional charge. As of August, 2010, transportation rates varied based on date and length of travel, but averaged $300 for individuals. Children between the ages of 6 through 11 were half price and children under 6 traveled free with accompanying adult.

    Alaska Ferry Adventures

    • Alaska Ferry Adventures is a privately owned ferry company that provides transpiration throughout Alaska, the Yukon region and British Columbia's coastal region. Alaska Ferry Adventures transports individuals, animals including the family pet and vehicles that range from bicycles, motorcycles and the family car to larger vehicles including campers and recreational vehicles. Alaska Ferry Adventures also offers private cabins while traveling and an on board lounge and restaurant, complete with wine list and bar services. Routes begin in Bellingham, Washington and extend throughout Alaska, ending in the Cold Bay region of the Bearing Sea. As of September, 2010, prices varied based on destination but averaged $353 per person and $797 for a standard size vehicle. Larger vehicles such as campers or RVs were extra.
