Train Trips in Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, with more than 277,000 residents. Located at the base of the Chugach Mountains and with more than 60 glaciers nearby, taking a train trip on Alaska Railroad from Anchorage is one way to view the Alaskan wilderness. Travelers can choose from various routes and take the opportunity to go whale watching, fishing and dog sledding along the way.
  1. Denali Star to Wasilla

    • Take a trip from Anchorage to nearby Wasilla, less than 45 miles away. Explore the wilderness outside Anchorage, with forests, rivers and wildlife such as moose, bears and wolves that can sometimes be seen from the train. Eagle River and Chugiak are some of the communities along the route before arriving in Wasilla. Adult tickets start at $51 and children are $26 during the 2011 value season, May through September.

    Glacier Discovery Train

    • Depart from Anchorage and take the Glacier Discovery Train south to Whittier or Grandview. Pass through forested areas and streams full of salmon. View Spencer Glacier with a 1.5-mile hike when you get off at the Spencer Whistle Stop. The Kenai Mountains, waterfalls and alpine meadows are some other sights along the trip. Canoe tours, rafting and fishing charters are available to passengers. As of 2010, adult tickets from Anchorage to The Spencer Whistle Stop are $103 for a return trip; tickets for children are $52 return.

    Coastal Classic Tour

    • Mountains, meadows, glaciers and wildlife such as moose, bears and wolves can all be seen on the Coastal Classic Tour, departing from Anchorage and heading to Seward. This train tour travels to the shores of Resurrection Bay, where passengers can go whale watching, sea kayaking, take dog sled rides or go fishing. The summit of Grandview and Bartlett Glacier can both be seen along the journey. As of 2010, prices for the tour start at $75 one-way for adults and $38 for children.
