Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, bridges) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise. Bridges are structures built to span physical obstacles such as rivers, valleys, or roads. They are used to provide passage over these obstacles, and are therefore an important part of infrastructure.
