What is the green stuff on Statue of Liberty?

The green color of the Statue of Liberty is due to a process called patination. This process occurs when the copper of the statue reacts with oxygen in the air and water to form a layer of copper carbonate. The copper carbonate layer protects the statue from further corrosion and gives it its characteristic green color.
