Types of LP Tank Handles

An LP tank is also known as a liquid propane tank, bottle or cylinder. LP tanks come in many sizes and are used for a variety of functions. The most common type of LP cylinder is known as a DOT (Department of Transportation) cylinder. DOT cylinders are used on campers, travel trailers and fifth wheels. Five-gallon LP tanks are standard for most outdoor grills. ASME pressure vessels are generally very large and used for heating homes and large buildings.

If you have a LP tank with an outdated valve you cannot legally get it refilled. Purchase an OPD adapter from your local liquid propane dealer. The adapter must be installed by the dealer as well. Many people find that it is less costly to purchase a new tank that is equipped with the new valve assembly. Outdated LP tanks should be surrendered to any LP dealer and not discarded, if usable. LP tank manufacturers recycle the old tanks and fit them with legal valves.
  1. OPD Device

    • As of 2002, all LP devices must be equipped with an OPD device. An OPD device is an overfill prevention device and is required by law to be on all LP tanks, bottles and cylinders. OPD devices are required on all DOT and ASME LP tanks. An OPD device insures that LP tanks are not filled more than 80 percent.

    POL CG 510 Valve

    • Rarely referred to as a handle, service valves can be one of three types. The POL CG 510 is commonly recognized by its five- or six-prong twist handle which has a left-handed hose connection. This valve assembly is currently illegal. This style valve can be adapted with an OPD device. If your tank has been adapted to the new style it will have a three-prong valve.

OPD and Type I OPD Valves

    • The second type of valve is called OPD service valve and has a quick disconnect. This type of valve is not permitted on RVs but is common on gas grills. This valve also has three prongs.

The third type of valve is the Type I OPD service valve and is recognized by a black or green connector along with a three-prong handle. If you have a POL valve on your tank, you will need to replace the tank with the new and mandatory Type I OPD service valve. In any case, if your valve handle is not clearly stamped as OPD, you should have it checked for legality by your local LP dealer.
