How to Repair an RV Black Water Tank Valve

A leaking black water tank in an RV can be a huge problem if not taken care of immediately. In most cases, it is one of the two black water tank's valves that is causing the problem. Flushing the system can sometimes dislodge obstructions but the valve itself may have worn out and need to be replaced. Find the leaking valve and replace it before it causes more damage to the RV.

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the black water tank through the waste sewer cap into an approved receptacle per the instructions supplied with the RV's hoses.

    • 2

Locate the two waste water tank valves attached to the storage tank. The valves have T-handles and one is usually larger than the other. Empty at least 5 gallons of water into the toilet of the RV. Inspect both valves to see which one is leaking.

    • 3

Empty the tank again. Remove the leaking valve by unscrewing the four screws attaching it to the flanges on the tank and the waste water line. Remove this assembly along with both rubber seals set in the grooves on each side of the valve. Replace the valve and two rubber seals with a new set per instructions provided by the manufacturer. Do not over-tighten the bolts as it will ruin the rubber seals.

    • 4

Pour another 5 gallons of water down the toilet to ensure the new valve is working properly.
