Purchase the correct toilet paper. RV supply stores sell special dissolving toilet paper that is made to break down easily when used inside of a black water tank. This paper is about twice as expensive as regular toilet paper. Although it does what it's supposed to do, you can save money by purchasing single-ply, septic-safe toilet paper instead.
Pour the correct holding tank chemicals down the toilet. While some RVers will never use anything but commercially made holding tank deodorizers and chemicals, others swear by a deodorizing system called "The Geo Method." This eco-friendly method is a recipe consisting of water softener, laundry detergent and chlorine bleach. Whatever method you choose, never use holding tank chemicals that contain formaldehyde, which can damage septic systems.
Avoid pouring anything other than human waste down the toilet. Household waste, such as grease, disposable wipes, feminine hygiene products and household cleansers, can react in unpleasant ways with whatever is being kept in the holding tank.
Keep your black water tank sewer valve closed when hooked up to utilities to avoid offending your neighbors with unpleasant odors. This practice will prevent sewage from sitting in your sewer hose.
Install a black water tank ventilation van. These fans are known as "Venturi" fans. They should be mounted to the rooftop vent that connects to your black water tank. The fans, which resemble shark fins, eliminate waste odors by pulling odors out of the tank and up through the vents. Venturi fans work with or without electricity because wind is what enables the shark fin-shaped device to rotate.
Allow both your gray and black water tanks to fill up as much as possible before dumping the contents. When you are ready to dispose of waste, dump black water tanks first. Follow by dumping the gray water tanks. This order will enable the gray water to wash solids out of the sewer hose. Rinse your black water tank with your RV's black water flushing system connector. By attaching a garden hose to this connection, you can rinse the inside of your black water tank with high-pressure water from the dump station.
