If the trailer weighs less than 10,000 pounds and is being used for personal or recreational purposes, you do not need a CDL. However, if the trailer weighs more than 10,000 pounds, you will need to obtain a CDL unless you meet one of the following exceptions:
* You are a farmer and are using the trailer to transport agricultural products.
* You are a member of the military and are using the trailer to transport military equipment.
* You are a volunteer firefighter and are using the trailer to transport firefighting equipment.
If the trailer is being used for commercial purposes, you will need to obtain a CDL regardless of its weight.
