Can a mechanic repossess vehicle from private property with no signed work order for non-payment?

In almost all cases, a mechanic cannot repossess a vehicle without consent, even if the repair services are not paid in full. Mechanics are required by law to follow a specific process to collect unpaid debts for services. This usually includes sending a collection letter, filing a lien on the vehicle, and possibly taking the owner to small claims court. Repossessing the vehicle is generally allowed only if the terms are specifically agreed upon in a written contract signed by the client. Without this kind of contract, the unauthorized taking of a vehicle is considered theft.
