South Texas Airports

As with many states in America, Texas has a large mixture of large international, smaller continental and minor airstrips. All of these play a specific role for both commercial and freight traffic into and out of the state. Freight traffic into south Texas takes up a lot of air travel, as the area is on the border with Mexico and is a major supply route into the U.S.

  1. Houston George Bush Intercontinental

    • This is the second largest airport in Texas behind Dallas/ Fort Worth and services some of the world's major airlines including Delta, Continental, KLM, Lufthansa, Air France and British Airways. It is also a major freight hub due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican border.

    Austin-Bergstrom International

    • This airport is located southwest of the city of Austin and deals mainly with American airline companies flying both between the states and abroad. These airlines include American Airlines, Continental, Delta and United Airlines.

    Corpus Christi International

    • Although it is technically an international airport, this is much smaller operation than Houston and Austin. It provides flights for America West, American Airlines, Continental, Delta, Northwest and Southwest Airlines.

    Harlingen-Rio Grande Valley International

    • This is the most southerly situated major airport in Texas and provides a vital link between Mexico and the continental United States. It also provides passenger services for Continental, Southwest and Sun Country Airlines.

    Laredo International

    • Located right on the border with Mexico Laredo is a hub for Continental, American Eagle and Azteca Airlines.

    San Antonio International

    • San Antonio is another larger airport that caters mainly to American based airlines and some South American ones flying into the U.S. These include American Airlines, Mexicana, United Airlines and Delta.

    McAllen International Airport

    • Situated on the U.S./ Mexico border, McAllen has become a passenger and cargo hub for Continental, American Airlines and Delta. The majority of flights from this airport are limited to other Texas airports.

    Brownsville

    • Located at the southernmost point of Texas between the Mexican border and the Gulf of Mexico, this airport hosts flights from American Airlines and Continental. These flights mainly go to Dallas/ Fort Worth or Houston.
