There are different types of roofs including aluminum, fiberglass and rubber. They each have their own special characteristics that must be treated differently. All the accessories on the roofs, no matter what type of roof it is, are mounted in the same way. To start repairs on the roofs, carefully inspect the roof. Remember safety always comes first, so do not approach the edges of the roof. Even after you find the problem, check to make sure everything else is in order.
If it is a leak in the roof, remove the old sealant from the area in question. Then clean the area with a non-petroleum-based soap and water and let it dry completely. Once dry, either apply roof sealing tape or sealant. Make sure the type of sealant you use is flexible when dried. If you decide to use the sealant make sure the application of which is smooth.
If a piece of the equipment on the roof is to be repaired, it will have to be removed to fix the problem. The sealant between the piece of equipment, or in the hole of any fasteners, will have to be completely removed and the area must be cleaned. This process is done as if you are only removing sealant. Next, the equipment can be replaced, including new sealant. Make sure there is no airspace in the sealant.
