How to Repair a Motorhome Retractable Step

Retractable steps are a necessity on an RV, making it easier to access the RV from the ground. Most electric steps for RVs are manufactured by the Kwikee Company. If proper maintenance is used on these steps, they will last for years. Kwikee sells a product called "Kwik-Lube," which is a grease for lubricating the hinge points. The most common problem with these steps is that they get stuck in the retracted position.

Instructions

    • 1

check the voltage with the voltmeter. It should be at 13.4 volts. If it is not, make sure the ground wire is tight and that the battery is charged.

    • 2

Clean the connector with a wire brush. This connector has a tendency to become corroded and a wire brush will remove the rust and make it work properly.

    • 3

Remove the four bolts and the pin which holds the arm to the step and the four-way connector between the electronics and the motor.

    • 4

Remove the motor from the gear case. It is held on by three screws; remove these screws and take out the motor. If the motor turns at least 20 degrees, it is in a bind.

    • 5

Install the replacement kit per instructions on the package. Each model will be different. The kit can be purchased at RV supply shops or some auto-parts stores.

    • 6

Screw the three screws holding the motor in back into place and re-install the pin in the arm. Screw the four bolts back in place as well.
