How to Add Steps to an Existing Step on an RV

When you purchase a recreational vehicle, the manufacturer will often leave a few feet between the last step and the ground. This is generally fine if your RV is parked on level ground. However, when it is on uneven ground, this can create an even bigger gap between the ground and the step, which could lead to a jarring experience if you are exiting the vehicle at night. One way to fix this is to add an additional step.

Things You'll Need

  • Mounting brackets
  • Bolts and nuts
  • Power drill
  • Wrench
  • Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the area for the additional step on the RV. If there is carpeting in the area remove it.

    • 2

Take the mounting bracket and check if the bolt holes are aligned with the bolt holes of the step. If the holes are not aligned, make holes using the power drill. The holes should be the same size as the bolts.

    • 3

Attach the mounting brackets to last step of the RV. Insert the bolts into the holes and lock them with the nuts using a wrench. Tighten the screws using a screwdriver. Make sure that the mounting bracket is securely attached to the step.

    • 4

Take the new step and align it with the mounting brackets. Attach the additional step to the bracket by putting in the screws. Tighten the screws using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
