How to Add Spikes to a Shoe

Many athletes, particularly runners, are encouraged by trainers and coaches to wear spikes on their shoes. Shoes with spikes add extra grip between your shoes and the surface that you're running on. This helps increase traction for more explosive movement and also aids grip in wet, slippery or crumbly conditions. If you participate in a sport where spikes are necessary, you first need to purchase specialty shoes for your sport that will accept spikes into their soles.

Things You'll Need

  • Spike shoes
  • Spikes
  • Spike wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Try on different types of spike shoes at a sporting goods store. You will want to purchase the shoe that fits best and is most comfortable on you (just because it's endorsed by a celebrity athlete doesn't mean it's the best shoe for you). Run around the store with different pairs on to get the feel of the shoes.

    • 2

Purchase a bag of athletic spikes if your shoes do not come with them already.

    • 3

Talk to your coach and trainers about where to place the spikes. Spike shoes will have holes in the soles where you can screw spikes in different patterns. Different sports will require different positions for the spikes. Your coaches and trainers will be able to tell you exactly where the spikes should go for optimal performance.

    • 4

Insert the first spike into a chosen hole on the bottom of the shoe. Turn the spike clockwise until it is completely inserted into the shoe. Tighten it with a spike wrench if necessary.

    • 5

Repeat Step 4 until all the spikes are placed into the proper holes.
