How to Fix Steps on a RV

Retractable steps make getting in and out of your RV pretty easy. The convenience of retractable steps means you do not need a step stool to climb in and out because your steps are right there when you open the door. If they aren't kept up, they become rusted or just start to look worn out and old. That is when they start to take away from the overall appearance and value of the RV. It is easy to fix this problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire brush
  • POR 15 (bought at auto parts store)
  • Indoor/outdoor carpeting
  • Soap and water
  • Utility knife

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old carpeting by cutting around the edges and under it with a utility knife. Dispose of the old carpeting.

    • 2

Use a wire brush on the steps to remove any rust found underneath the carpet. You may have to scrape hard if the rust is thick and overabundant.

    • 3

Wash off steps, using a towel or rag and mild soap and water. Let the area completely air dry.

    • 4

Apply POR 15, following the directions carefully on the can. Cover your face and keep the product away from your face and skin. Coat the entire step with the solution. Let it air dry for an hour.

    • 5

Apply the new carpeting. The indoor/outdoor kind with adhesive on the back works best. You can then just measure the step, cut the measurements needed from the carpeting, peel the backing off and apply.
