Vacuum regularly. Take care of your RV carpeting using similar methods to used to care for carpeting in your home. Vacuuming will eliminate dust, dirt and food particles which can become ground into the fibers over time. As soil accumulates within carpet fibers, it can have a gluing effect, creating matted carpeting which will further retain dry particles and soil. Vacuuming also helps to lift the nap and provide a fresh appearance. If your RV is used daily, vacuum twice per week using three passes of the vacuum for lightly soiled areas and up to seven passes in areas with heavy soiling. If you only periodically use your RV, vacuuming when you are finished with the trip will be sufficient.
Promptly clean spots and spills. Some methods of stain removal include using cold water; ammonia (1 tablespoon mixed with one-half cup of water); detergent (1 teaspoon mixed with 1 cup of warm water); vinegar (one-third cup mixed with two-thirds of water) or a specialized carpet cleaner. No matter which method you prefer, be sure to remove all solid material as soon as possible. Use a paper towel or a cloth towel to absorb liquid using a blotting motion instead of scrubbing. Scrubbing will create a fuzzy carpet surface.
Use the power of steam. There are many steam cleaners available on the market and the hot-water extraction method will clean your carpeting while leaving very little residue behind. Most residential carpet manufacturers recommend professional cleaning every year to year and a half for optimal longevity. RV carpets, however, are generally used less frequently and should do well with regular personal care.
Use an entry mat. Placing a welcome mat at the door of your RV will encourage guests and family members to wipe soiled shoes prior to tracking dirt onto your RV carpeting.
