DIY Camper Kitchens

A camper provides the owners with a living area on wheels. Besides a layout that accommodates sitting and sleeping, many campers have kitchens. Though small, this kitchen provides some of the basic amenities typically associated with a kitchen at home. It includes a cooking area, sink and cabinet. Common DIY camper projects involve teardrop campers, which have a kitchen hidden behind the hatch located at the rear of the trailer.

Instructions

      Apply fiberglass panel to the interior kitchen walls. This material makes them easy to wash down with a hose. Apply matching silicone to cover the seams. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cutting the material and securing the panels to the walls.

      Determine the dimensions--height, width--depth, for the top cabinet based on the size of the trailer. This cabinet install on the rear wall of the trailer kitchen. Cut the cabinet frame out of 3/4-inch by 1 1/2-inch poplar lumber.

      Cut the four vertical components. Secure a piece in each corner on the rear wall. Install the two vertical component at the front. Secure the framing to the wall with carpenter glue and screws.

      Cut the side, front and rear horizontal cross framing, which install between the vertical components. Attach the horizontal crosspieces between the vertical framing. Fill the void between the interior of the frame with foil-faced rigid foam.

      Cut the interior panels for the cabinet. Use 1/2-inch oak plywood for the interior cabinet walls. Fill the void underneath the cabinet with Polystyrene foam insulation. Cover the insulation with 1/8-inch oak paneling.

      Fabricate the cabinet doors out of 1/2-inch oak plywood. Apply fiberglass paneling on both sides of the door. Secure two spring hinges near the top and bottom of the door. Install oak pull knobs. Follow the manufacture’s instruction for installing a twist lock.

      Install the frame for the counter top. Measure up 20 inches from the trailer floor. Mark the spot on each wall, which is the height for the countertop surface.

      Cut the two pieces of 3/4-inch by 1 1/2-inch poplar boards. Make the length an inch shorter than the depth of the countertop. Mark the correct height for the top edge of the countertop support framing. Install the framing on the side wall with carpenter glue and galvanized screws that are 1 1/2 inches long.

      Measure the area between the sidewall framing. Cut the front and rear cross supports this length. Use carpenter glue and screws to secure. Cut and install center vertical supports, which attach under the crosspieces and down to the camper floor.

      Cut out the holes for the sink and cooktop in the countertop before installing. Follow the product manufacturer’s instructions for the correct dimensions. Mark the outline of the holes on the underside of the countertop. Cut the material with a jigsaw outfitted with a 24 teeth per inch metal blade. Position the countertop on top of the frame.

      Follow the product installation manual for installing the 11-inch by 17-inch sink, which connects underneath the countertop to camper drain “P” traps with an external bucket. Install a 10-gallon water tank, three-way faucet and refrigerator in accordance with the instructions accompanying each product.

      Insert the two-burner drop-in cooktop in the countertop opening. Connect the stove to the disposable propane tank in accordance with the instructions.
