How to Disinfect an RV Holding Tank Due to Smells

When odors and bad scents waft into the RV it may be time to clean the holding tank. The holding tank isolates grey water coming out from sinks and the shower. Over time, bacteria multiplies and causes unwanted foul odors. Eliminate these odors with a proper washing and cleansing of the tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the RV to an authorized dump station. Find dump stations at interstate rest areas and campgrounds. Drain the holding tank.

    • 2

Drive back home and park the RV in a flat and level area. Open the holding tank cap.

    • 3

Go in the RV and scrub down the drains in the sink and shower. Use soapy water and rubber gloves when handling the drain pieces or tank caps.

    • 4

Pour one cup of bleach for every 15 gallons of water into the holding tank. Fill the tank two-thirds full of water from the garden hose. Put the cap back.

    • 5

Drive for 15 minutes. Find a hilly and curvy road to slosh the water and bleach solution in the tank. Drive the RV back to the dump station and drain the bleach and water.

    • 6

Add 1/2 cup of bleach with 2 or 3 gallons of water into the holding tank and replace the cap. The bleach acts to cut odors and keep the holding tank sanitary and clean.
