How to Refinish My RV's Clear Coat Surface

Peeling and yellowing clear coat can make your RV appear old and worn. A solid clear coat is your first line of defense against rain, snow and the beating sun. The clear coat provides a protective barrier to prevent moisture from attacking your RV and causing rust and oxidation. Refinishing the clear coat on your RV is not something you have to leave to a professional. Any RV owner can perform this maintenance project on a Saturday afternoon. You will have the shiniest RV on the road in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the RV with clean water to remove large dirt and debris.

    • 2

Combine water and oxygenated bleach according to package instructions. Purchase oxygenated bleach at the hardware or grocery store. Scrub the outside of the RV with the solution and a scrub brush. Rinse the RV with clean water.

    • 3

Scrub the RV's surface with degreasing cleaner. Remove all chemicals from the surface. Rinse with clean water.

    • 4

Pour scouring powder onto a scrub sponge. While the RV is wet, rub the sponge and powder over the surface of the RV in a circular motion. This process will scuff the finish and allow the clear coat to sink in. Rinse the RV thoroughly.

    • 5

Pour rubbing alcohol onto a clean rag. Rub the RV's surface with the alcohol to remove any remaining residue.

    • 6

Dip a clean paintbrush into the clear coat. Paint the surface of the RV with a light, even stroke. Apply two to three thin coats of clear coat. Allow each coat to dry to the touch before applying the next.
